A biennial prize will be awarded to a choreographer and composer for the best original dance with original music which has had its premiere professional (by that we mean, paid admissions) performance within the past two years. The next Gross Family prize will be given in 2018 for works first performed in 2016 and 2017. The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2018.

Equal awards to the choreographer and composer ($15,000 each – subject to increase or decrease at the discretion of the directors).

To encourage risk taking, special notice will be given to those submissions where the creative team pushes out of their comfort zone, e.g.: a hip-hop Swan Lake, a jazz Ramayana. Although not the main criteria, an important one. Obviously the interaction between the score and the dance are of paramount importance. We also love live music and want to encourage its use.

Like our grant giving process we aim for simplicity. There will be no awards dinner with celebrity attendees (We doubt Brad, Angelina or Kim could be enticed to attend).

Only checks (sorry, no statuettes) will be sent to the winners. You’ll have to handle your own publicity as we cannot.

All submissions should include:

Program showing the date and venue of the premier
Brief biographies
Contact information

Send submissions (by July 1) to:

The Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation
186 Riverside Drive
New York, NY 10024

We will have advisors from both the dance and music worlds, but alas will have to take responsibility for the choices ourselves.

Unfortunately we cannot accept submissions of works we have commissioned.
