Vox (2024)
New Chamber Ballet
Choreography: Miro Magloire
Composer: Elizabeth Gartman
Costumes: Sarah Thea Craig

Vox is the result of a multi-year collaboration of choreographer Miro Magloire with composer Elizabeth Gartman.

Gartman’s score for piano and violin was inspired by various aspects of the vocal mechanism, such as respiration, vibration, and phonation, leading to a series of musical solos and duets, each created from the dancers’ physical interpretation of speaking their own names. Incorporating recorded interviews with the dancers about their (real and metaphorical) voices, the dance is as much a portrait of the artists as a reflection on the emotional parallels between singing and dancing.

Vox was performed in New Chamber Ballet’s signature, in-the-round setup, with the audience seated up-close and able to see the kaleidoscopic choreography from various angles.
